Race to Promontory: Another Perspective
April 11, 2019 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm MDT
In his recent work, Zhi LIN retrieves the memories and historical experience of Chinese laborers on the western portion of the Transcontinental Railroad in the nineteenth-century. In particular, his work contrasts the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act with the contributions of immigrant Chinese laborers that have been erased from conventional historical narratives of the American West and encourages audiences to reflect upon the current socio-political landscape and its historical precedents.
Zhi LIN received both undergraduate and graduate education at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou, China. He obtained additional graduate degrees at the Slade School of Fine Art in England, and the University of Delaware in the United States. From his earliest practice, political events and social movements have inspired him to examine patterns of violence, intolerance, injustice, and complicity in public behavior. He has had over 40 solo shows and participated in more than 150 group exhibitions in Europe, the Americas, and Asia, and his work is included in museum collections in the United States, Great Britain, and China. A recipient of numerous national and international awards, he is currently Professor of Art at the University of Washington’s School of Art + Art History + Design
