Schedule

Shifts are three hours long; start and end times flexible as long as they fall within the following time frames:

  • Tuesday, three hours between 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday, three hours between 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Time Commitment:
One three-hour shift per week, for the duration of the September 2017 – May 2018 school year.

Position Summary

Spark excitement, curiosity, and an appreciation for science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) through facilitating open-ended, hands-on activities and creative projects in one of the Museum’s learning labs. Create an engaging environment where field trip students can explore puzzling problems and design imaginative solutions. Prepare and organize supplies and materials needed. Assist in program development and evaluation. Must be willing to participate in one-on-one meetings with supervisor to ensure performance.

Age Requirement: 18 years or older

  • Enjoy interacting with children and adults
  • Comfortable facilitating within a class-size group
  • Ability to be courteous, respectful, and patient with visitors
  • Desire to learn as well as teach
  • Ability to take initiative and adapt quickly in changing circumstances
  • Capable of standing, walking, and talking for long periods
  • Good oral communication skills
  • Cooperative nature; able to accept instruction and correction
  • Punctual and dependable

Training Required

All volunteers are required to attend a 3.5 hour New Staff and Volunteer Orientation training prior to starting their volunteer position. In addition, STEM Lab volunteers are required to attend a School Programs Field Trip Volunteer Kickoff and a School Programs Customer Service training. Further on-the-job training will be provided for STEM Lab activity content.

  • 1st Friday of the month: 12:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
  • 3rd Wednesday of the month: 5:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
School Programs Field Trip Volunteer Kickoff, 2 hours:
  • Wednesday, August 30, 2017, 5:00-7:00pm
School Programs Customer Service training, 1.5 hours:
  • TBD
STEM Lab on-the-job training:

NHMU Mission

The Natural History Museum of Utah illuminates the natural world and the place of humans within it. STEM Lab volunteers will facilitate inquiry- and problem-based learning in an open-ended setting for students visiting the Museum during field trips, helping to cultivate enjoyment of science, technology, engineering, and math.
