Interpreting Music Video

April 10, 2019 @ 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm MDT

The music video, once a mere advertisement for an artist’s record, has transformed into the premiere format for popular music consumption. This talk begins by examining the evolution of the music video, from MTV through the YouTube revolution to streaming music video services. It then introduces tools for the interpretation of music videos derived from music analysis, cinematography, and sociology. Finally, it applies these tools to reveal rich tapestries of meaning in videos by Rihanna, Janelle Monae, and others.

Lecture by music theorist Dr. Bradley Osborn (University of Kansas)
