Juneteenth Summit: Wave of Freedom

June 20 @ 11:00 am 2:30 pm MDT

Juneteenth is a historical holiday that commemorates the day when Black Americans who had been enslaved in Texas were finally informed they’d been freed by the Emancipation Proclamation. The Juneteenth Summit will gather in the Spencer Fox Eccles Business Building’s Bill & Pat Child Family Community Hall for a series of panels and presentations on Black excellence, achievement, education, and freedom–featuring a keynote by Dr. Sidni Lloyd-Shorter of the Utah Black Chamber of Commerce. Presenters include the Black Physicians of Utah and the university’s Black Cultural Center, HBCU IMPACT Program, and Black Student Union.

Registration is required for this event.

ASL interpretation will be provided. All requests for event access support and other questions or concerns may be directed to edi-events@utah.edu.

Juneteenth 2023: Wave of Freedom

This event is part of Juneteenth: June 19 – 20, 2023.

This year’s Juneteenth theme, “Wave of Freedom,” affirms every person’s right to equity and dignity. While Juneteenth is a reminder of delayed freedom for many Black Americans, it is also an opportunity for everyone to reflect on how we can ensure the country continues to live up to its founding principles of liberty and justice for all.
