Poetry as Personal Insight into Black Lives

February 10, 2021 @ 12:00 pm 1:00 pm MST

To register for the free workshop, please call the Wellness Center at 801-587-4585. Free for HCI patients, caregivers, and staff.

Join HCI’s Writer-in-Residence Susan Sample in reading and discussing poems by African Americans in honor of Black History Month. Feb. 10, we will listen to older works, including classics by cancer patients Audre Lorde and Lucille Clifton, as well as contemporary poetry, including writing by Amanda Gorman who read at President Biden’s inauguration.

Feb. 17, we will read selections from Mend, a collection of poems written in the imagined voices of enslaved Black women whose surgeries gave rise to the field of gynecology. Kwoya Fagin Maples, author of Mend, will be featured Feb. 24-25 during a virtual visit to U of U Health.
