Although this situation may not be ongoing actively, the Racist & Bias Incident Response Team is working with appropriate departments to monitor and prevent future reoccurrence. Those who believe they have been the target of bias, intolerance or discrimination may report an incident to the public incident report form (bias and intolerance) or the Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action (sexual misconduct and discrimination).

Please direct any questions or concerns in regard to this bias incident to the RBIRT Manager at RBIresponse@utah.edu.

What happened

The Racist and Bias Incident Response Team has received several reports throughout the semester regarding transphobic and xenophobic flyers posted in various buildings at the University of Utah. These flyers and events contain anti-LGBTQ and xenophobic content that may be considered harmful and offensive toward members of our campus community.

The University of Utah is committed to open, free and robust discussion, debate, and exchange of ideas as an indispensable part of its educational mission, even when the ideas are potentially harmful, controversial, and unpopular. A thorough description of the University’s speech policy, rules for posting on campus, and definitions of hate speech can be found here.

What is being done

We recognize that speech, posters, and views expressed at speaker events can have a significant impact on an individual’s well-being and mental health, and may also impact our students’ ability to succeed in school. Students seeking academic support and/or other resources can meet with a student support case manager in the Office of the Dean of Students by drop in appointment or by filling out a referral for support, concern or resources. Faculty or staff members who are impacted can seek support resources through the Employee Assistance Program.

If you or others are experiencing targeted discrimination or harassment related to these events, please connect with the Office of Equal Opportunity to review your options. More information on discriminatory harassment and offensive speech can be found here.

The University of Utah’s commitment

The University of Utah is a center of learning, with a vision that through education, we can impact our world for the better. Our foundational principles recognize our shared humanity and the dignity of all people. The university is committed to continue efforts that uplift and celebrate all members of our campus community and enhance a sense of belonging.
