Dia de los muertos, honoring our ancestors

CESB and Poder y Praxis present: Día De Los Muertos: “Honoring Our Ancestors” The celebration this year will be a collaboration between ALPFA, LSU, and the Dream Center.

The ofrenda for this years celebration will be located in the Union Lobby from 10/31 – 11/3. Everyone is welcome to bring decorations and other additions to the ofrenda. If you want to bring something, please contact Lucas Alvarez at joseph.alvarez@utah.edu to coordinate details.

This celebration will be a two-day series. The first day of the celebration will take place on November 1st from 5PM – 7PM in Child’s Hall. This will be a time for socializing and decoration. We will be having food and going over what Día De Los Muertos is and its significance. You will be able to bring pictures of your loved ones and then toward the end, we will be placing them on the Ofrenda.

The second day of the celebration will be on November 2nd from 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM in the Unity Lounge (Union RM. 293). It will be a discussion and presentation by members of the CESB and Dream Center Staff. In line with the theme of “Honoring Our Ancestors”, we will talk about this year’s theme within three contexts:

  • the role of colonialism in Latin America
  • the commodification of Día De Los Muertos
  • generational trauma, poverty, and lack of rest

We humbly ask that you RSVP so that we can account for drinks, food, pan dulce/pan de muerto, etc.

Those who RSVP will also be sent another form via email where they will be given the option to submit a picture of a loved one and have it printed on paper for if you don’t want to bring an original. We hope to see you there!
