Dear University of Utah Community,

We have been charting a new path forward – not only for the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion division, but for the entire University of Utah community. The contents of this strategic plan are among many firsts for the university. The goals and objectives outlined here highlight our overarching goal to help lead the university in equity-centered campus transformation.

This Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Strategic Plan reflects a commitment to what we will do to chart a more inclusive path forward at the University of Utah. The goals outlined here reflect concrete aspirations that will require organizational investment, coordination, and leadership to realize.

At the University of Utah, the Guiding Principles on Equity and Belonging highlight our path forward. These principles embody the daily practices of equity, diversity, and inclusion. Through these principles, we challenge ourselves to lead structural change and build a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive campus where everyone feels a sense of belonging.

Within our division, we center our work on four strategic areas – belonging, climate, engagement, and health equity. These priority areas define all of our collective efforts to ensure we equip every member of our community with equity too across the entire university.

All of these efforts are rooted in courage. To lead with equity, requires courage. To be centered in our guiding principles requires courage. To do this work, as outlined by this strategic plan, requires courage. Thankfully, there is power and comfort in numbers. It is because of all of you that we all feel more emboldened and empowered to do this work. We can achieve each of these goals if we all do it together.

I am privileged to lead this work everyday, in partnership with you.

Sincerely,
Vice President Mary Ann Villarreal
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

Our Common Language

Equity, diversity, and inclusion are the foundation of the University of Utah's values.

Equity

Equity aims to identify and actively eliminate systemic barriers to access and opportunities that prevent the full participation of people, specifically those from historically underrepresented groups in higher education. Equity ensures fair treatment, access, opportunity, and advancement for all students, faculty, trainees, and staff to develop to their full academic, social, and career potential.

Diversity

Diversity refers to the variety of personal experiences, values, and worldviews that arise from the whole of who we are. These experiences are valued, and include but are not limited to: race, ethnicity, gender and gender expression, age, religion, mental or neurological function, language, disability, sexuality, and socioeconomic status. It is this collective that makes us a stronger whole.

Inclusion

Inclusion is the act of creating a community where everyone is welcomed, respected, supported, and valued.  Inclusion actively embraces differences and engages historically underrepresented individuals so that diversity can thrive.

Priority Areas

These priority areas define all of our collective efforts to ensure we equip every member of our community with equity across the entire university.

Ensuring Belonging for All

We are boldly determined to create a campus where everyone knows their authentic self is affirmed and supported in order to thrive at the University of Utah and beyond.

Belonging Strategies

Fostering an Inclusive Campus Climate

We hold ourselves accountable to cultivating a climate that is equitable and inclusive of the diverse bodies represented throughout our community by consistently assessing university policies, programs, and practices so that everyone can thrive.

Climate Strategies

Amplifying Community Engagement

We actively cultivate internal and external community connections where trust is built, the effects of injustice are uprooted, and long-term and sustainable outcomes and relationships are developed.

Engagement Strategies

Securing Health Equity

We courageously and creatively develop institutional policies, practices, and programs that eliminate health inequities and ensure all patients and clients achieve equitable health outcomes.
