Join us for an insightful session during Women’s Week, where we will delve into the unique aspects of women’s aging. Explore the prevalent issue of ageism, challenges of the ‘sandwich’ generation, and intersection of women and dementia. Don’t miss this opportunity to engage in a meaningful conversation about the diverse experiences of women as they age.

Anne Asman, MS


Program Manager, HMHI Geriatric Psychiatric Clinic
The University of Utah

Anne Asman (she/her) has an MS in Interdisciplinary Gerontology from the University of Utah and a certificate in Dementia Education and Communication from the University of Tasmania in Australia. She also completed the Utah Certificate of Palliative Care Education, and Dementia Assist Communications certification. Anne is Chair of the Dementia Aware work group for the Utah Department of Health Alzheimer’s and other Dementias Coordinating Council and works closely with the Area Associations on Aging throughout the state, the State Division of Aging and Adult Services. Anne heads the Summit County Aging Alliance and works with multiple public and private organizations to provide and advocate for best practice geriatric care across the state. She has facilitated presentations on Advanced Directives and End of Life planning, The Aging Brain, and continues to teach “Embrace Aging” courses for Osher Lifelong Learning at the University of Utah. She is a member of the Institute on Aging, University of Utah Center on Aging, American Federation for Aging Research, American Society on Aging, and the Gerontological Society of America.

Sheryl Bagshaw, MBA


Licensed Dementia Practitioner and Educator, Certified Validation Worker and Author

Sheryl Bagshaw (she/her), MBA is a Dementia Practitioner/Educator. She holds a master’s in business administration from the University of Phoenix and a Bachelor of Science in Sociology and a Gerontology Certificate from Utah State University where she started the Student Gerontology Association. Sheryl has worked in senior care since 1997 and is a licensed Social Service Worker. Since 2005, Sheryl has specifically been working with dementia clients and their families. She has been a Cognitive Interventionist, a Senior Placement Advisor, a Case Manager, a Long-Term Care Social Worker, a Discharge Planner, the Director of a Dementia Unit, and the host for various Family Support Groups. Sheryl holds Certification as a Validation Worker through Naomi Feil’s Validation Institute, has obtained her Certification as an Eden Alternative Associate, and she holds national certification as a Dementia Practitioner through the NCCDP. Sheryl has been a Volunteer Ambassador for the Alzheimer’s Association and is currently a member of the Utah State Coordinating Council for Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias. She is certified to teach the “Dementia Dialogues” course and is sought after throughout the state as a Dementia Educator and Speaker. She is also the author of the books “Angels at the Bedside” and “Dementia.”

Gerontologist Care Manager; HMHI Geriatric Psychiatric Clinic
The University of Utah

Briana Velarde (she/her) is a gerontologist with a background in exercise science and a specialized focus on community resources for older adults. Currently, she serves as a devoted care manager at the University of Utah’s HMHI Geriatric Psychiatry Clinic. Passionate about leveraging technology to combat social isolation among older adults, she extends her influence beyond clinic boundaries, actively engaging in community education, awareness initiatives and curriculum development. Briana’s dedication is rooted in empowering caregivers by providing crucial resources and knowledge, aiming to support them in their journey of caring for their loved ones with unparalleled compassion.

Childcare Strategy Facilitator
The University of Utah

Bree Murphy (she/her) has an MS in Parks, Recreation and Tourism from the University of Utah with a background in social psychology and experiential education. She has been working with families and children for over twenty years creating innovative early childhood and youth programs to better meet the needs of working parents. Bree believes in working in conjunction with families to nurture the healthy development of children. She is passionate about ensuring that children have safe environments to learn and play, so parents and guardians can go to work and provide for their families and the future. As the Child Care Strategy Facilitator at the University of Utah, Bree has been assessing the child care needs at the U exploring options and providing childcare solutions that could help support the growing needs of faculty, staff, and students. Bree is a member of the Utah State Child Care Licensing Committee serving as the Child Care Development expert. She is part of the Utah Care for Kids Network advocating for the importance of high-quality, affordable child care, and using her voice to address the issues working parents face when child care is not affordable or accessible.
