Mental Health and Belonging

Maintaining good mental health and a sense of belonging are critical parts of overall well-being—and the University of Utah and Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion (EDI) are committed to providing the resources, activities, and support every member of our community needs to thrive.

We understand that exclusion and isolation can have a powerful and profound impact on an individual’s overall well-being—and that a recent Brookings report found “the decline in well-being has been especially pronounced in young adults ages 18 to 24.” Other reports have drawn increased attention to the important human need to belong and feel connected to those around us. “Celebrating U Completely” seeks to uplift those who’ve felt dislocated or disconnected from their campus community—including those groups who’ve faced legal, financial, and systemic barriers to higher education in the past as well as present. We want each and every member of our campus community to know you belong.

University life—whether you’re a student, staff person, faculty, or trainee—can be invigorating and rewarding. But we also know that for many of us, it can sometimes be challenging. Struggles in classes, social life, finances, and our sense of belonging are common and can feel insurmountable at times, making it difficult to keep our forward momentum. Mental health is an area of heightened interest for those in higher education—especially in recent years as increased pressure on our communities has created a strain on social engagement and cohesion.

That’s why mental health, belonging, and establishing a strong support system are a vital part of “Celebrating U Completely.” The University of Utah offers a wide range of resources, counseling services, and support. Many of these services are free to U of U students and other members of our campus community.
